Fort Peck Tribes, Montana
The Fort Peck Tribes in Montana is a reservation and community which is home to two out of the more than 550 recognized Native American tribes in the United States. Rich with history and traditions, the umbrella organization was formed in the late 1800s to serve the Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes.
It needed a high-tech solution for both emergency and day-to-day communications. It also faces a troubling threat of human trafficking, which is not unusual for tribes living near the boom-and-bust cycle of the energy extraction industry. Fort Peck Tribes turned to Regroup Mass Notification to serve its needs.
Emergencies and Day-to-Day Communication Needs
Fort Peck Tribes administrators use mass notifications for:
- Work-related messages, on any device, for business continuity and meeting or schedule awareness
- Conducting active shooter drills
- Emergency notifications, including weather alerts and warnings
- Be-on-the-lookout (BOLO) messages for the community to help find at-risk missing people, or people who might cause a threat to the community

A Troubling Modern Problem
An unsettling trend has emerged from the extraction industry, including hydraulic fracturing and oil drilling. As temporary living situations accommodate the industry’s many workers, often in remote locations, these “mini boom towns” or “man camps” bring with them an increase in sexual crimes and human trafficking. Both the United Nations Development Program and the U.S. State Department have released reports on this terrible problem around the world and in the United States.
Fort Peck Tribes is one of many reservations located near the boom-and-bust cycle of energy extraction, and the dangers that can accompany it. The Fort Peck Reservation is able to use Regroup to inform its community about human trafficking, and to immediately notify residents about missing people — in a timely manner on any device.
For its part, several organizations involved in the extraction industry, including the Society of Petroleum Engineers, say they are aware of the problem. They say they are working to raise awareness and combat human trafficking near their operations.
